Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo chaired Council of Governors ASAL Committee high level meeting with USAID Resilience Coordinator in Kenya Jennifer Maurer and their implementing partners at Council of Governors offices in Nairobi. The leaders deliberated on USAID support to ASAL Committee with the objective of unlocking socioeconomic potential of the ASAL Counties.
Governor Lonyangapuo noted that transforming agriculture within the devolved units required collaborative efforts between the government, development partners and the private sector. He ppromised to spearhead agricultural activities, saying pastoralists in the Asal areas have been empowered after years of marginalisation by past regimes. “Devolution came at the right time and it has empowered pastoralists who had been forgotten for years,” he said.
The increasing population in ASAL areas and effects of climate change have had negative impacts and continues to create a significant challenge to the general development of the ASALs. Therefore, the governor agreed that there is a need to develop sustainable agricultural systems with appropriate technology to increase food production as well improve on their marketing system and processing capacity in order to address post-harvest losses and wastage during preparation and consumption.
The governors greatly appreciated the efforts by USAID towards developing ASALs and emphasized that the counties will continue working in partnership to improve livelihoods of its people in the ASALS.
